Beatitudes Campus to host Dr. Harvey Cox, Hollis Research Professor of Divinity at Harvard University, as Theologian in Residence

Harvey Cox, Hollis Research Professor of Divinity at Harvard University, will be the first “Theologian in Residence” at Beatitudes Campus from Jan. 16, 2016 – Feb. 11, 2016.  He will be living at the campus and will present lectures at Beatitudes Campus and throughout the Phoenix area during his month-long residency. A world renowned scholar, Cox is an authority on the interaction of religion, culture and politics. He has written many books, including “Secular City,” which was an international bestseller and selected as one of the most influential books of 20th century Protestant theology.

“Having Dr. Cox as our Theologian in Residence will be a far-reaching experience, not just for Beatitudes Campus but for the Phoenix community as a whole,” says Rev. Peggy Roberts, senior vice president of spiritual life at Beatitudes Campus. “As a faith-based organization serving older adults, our Mission Statement calls us to welcome people of all faith traditions. Dr. Cox’s presence will stimulate and challenge our thinking about issues of faith.”

Cox will be presenting a series of public lectures at Beatitudes Campus as well as at Arizona State University, Dayspring Methodist Church in Tempe, Rotary Club 100 in Phoenix, and Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church. He will also be a guest minister at two local churches throughout the Valley – Church of the Beatitudes United Church of Christ in Phoenix and The Fountains United Methodist Church in Fountain Hills. All events are free and open to the public.

“Among life plan communities like Beatitudes Campus, we clearly are at the vanguard of inviting renowned experts to live and teach among our 650 residents,” says Michelle Just, president and CEO of Beatitudes Campus. “We currently host a Scholar in Residence, who, during the yearlong program, has helped engage our residents in reaching out to the greater community through educational and social pursuits. With Dr. Cox as a theologian in residence, it is our hope that he will encourage our understanding of the rich diversity of faith.”

Cox is widely regarded as one of the most influential religious scholars of the last 50 years. He has taught extensively on the intersection of Christianity and Islam and the rise of fundamentalism in both religious. “Harvey Cox has been a voice of both reason and faith in our cynical times,” says Deepak Chopra, author of “Jesus: A Story of Enlightenment.”

At Beatitudes Campus, he will hold a series of three lectures on his latest book, “How to Read the Bible” (HarperCollins, 2015). In this highly acclaimed book, Cox discusses three ways of approaching the Bible that can be reconciled o the enrichment of all. Alan Dershowitz, Felix Frankfurter Professor of law emeritus at Harvard University says of this book: “No one who reads this will ever again approach the Jewish or Christian scriptures the same way. This is a must read for the religious, the secular and everyone in between.”

Cox will be available for media interviews. Cox’s public appearance schedule is listed below.
