April 12, 2010 - Go, Whoppers, Go! Go, Whoppers, Go!

The “Beatitudes Whoppers” – no this is not an item on our menu it’s the name of our resident Wii Bowling League! Currently, we have seven residents who are part of the team and meet weekly to play other Wii teams from different parts of the country. The Whoppers are sponsored by MCL Enterprises, owner of several local Burger King restaurants – we appreciate their support of our team!

The Whoppers play two games each Thursday and submit the scores to the National Senior League’s website and by Monday they know if they have won or lost. The game is kept score like a regular bowling game and each player controls where to stand and how to throw the ball using the Wii remote. Residents can play either standing or sitting to accommodate varying mobility levels. The first tournament ended this month with the Whoppers coming in 5th out of 8 teams.

“Walking around the Campus on game day and you see the team wearing their bowling shirts, you can feel the sense of pride they have for their teammates,” says Jon Schilling, Beatitudes Campus Recreation & Wellness Coordinator. “Most importantly, you can feel the companionship with each team member.”

The Wii bowling games are a great addition to our recreation and event planning and they also provide a chance for bowlers to have fun, socialize, and stay active – ultimately enriching the lives of our residents! We wish them luck in their next tournament, which begins this summer – Go, Whoppers, Go!

January 15, 2010 - The Beatitudes Campus is remembering Dr. Dolores “Dee” Nelson as a beloved resident, friend, supporter and visionary of our community. She is also the wife of the Rev. Dr. Culver “Bill” Nelson, our Founding Pastor Emeritus. Dolores Dee Nelson

Dee, in her eighty-fourth year, passed away peacefully in the presence of her family on November 21, 2009. A distinguished musician and community leader, her marriage of 62 years to the Rev. Dr. Culver H. Nelson made her a key figure in the founding and development of both Church of the Beatitudes and the Beatitudes Campus. Born in Graham, Texas, raised in Grand Junction, Colorado, Dee served during the Second World War as Executive Assistant to the Geologists responsible for the Uranium extraction and development used to help end the war. She then attended the University of Redlands where she and her husband met. In her career she was Doctor of Fine Arts, Minister of Music, Miss America contestant from Colorado, community leader. But her greatest joy was as mother to three children, Mark, Kirk, Becky; Grandmother to seven; and Great Grandmother to two; and her loving appreciation of caregiver and daughter-in-law Pamela. One of her lifelong friends wrote, "Dee was grounded, gracious, genuine, loyal and SO beautiful." Private family services will be held at the Beatitudes Campus. This will be followed by a formal celebration on the morning of January 17, 2010, in worship at the church she helped found and served for most of her adult life, Church of the Beatitudes. The focus of this service will be the choir with orchestra performing one of her favorite pieces of music, Faure's Requiem Mass.

November 13, 2009 - The Last Dance for Sundance - Pet Therapy Dog Makes his Last Visit at Health Care CenterWatch the photo slideshow on AZcentral.com

This week, residents and staff members joined together to say goodbye to Sundance, the 8-year-old beautiful and caring Labrador Retriever, who made regular visits to our community over the last three years or more.

Sundance is a Hospice of the Valley pet therapy dog who helped start the Pet Connections program back in 2006. But Sundance has been forced to retire due to severe arthritis, according to his owner and Hospice of the Valley Pet Program Director, Katie Howland O’Brien. Unfortunately, arthroscopic surgery that Sundance had earlier in the year couldn’t help him.

Even though we were sad to learn of his retirement, we were excited to have Sundance do his very last visit on the Vermilion Cliffs neighborhood of the Health Care Center, which serves those with moderate to severe dementia and Alzheimer's disease. When Sundance arrived on the fourth floor a few residents raised their hands and greeted him. Sundance looked around and went right up to resident, David Amaril, who gave him a dog biscuit.

“I can tell there’s a special bond between animal and man when a therapy dog like Sundance visits our residents on the Vermilion Cliffs – I am always amazed to see this special “connection!”  We will all miss that special connection Sundance had with our residents” says Kathleen Deyo, Activity Director for Vermilion Cliffs, the 4th floor neighborhood.

The event did garner some media attention and the Arizona Republic was on hand to capture the special moment. (See photo and click below for full story and video.) We are grateful to Sundance, Katie, and the Hospice of the Valley team for your dedicated service to our community. The residents and staff of the Beatitudes Campus will miss you Sundance! The Beatitudes Campus is a center of excellence in the field of aging services. Specifically, we have developed best practices in dementia care and we are committed to sharing our knowledge on a local, national, and international level.

Through generous funding from the BHHS Legacy Foundation, our Dementia and Aging Research Department has collaborated with Hospice of the Valley and created the Palliative Care for Advanced Dementia: A Model Teaching Unit (PCAD) program. In late October 2009, an article entitled, Palliative Care for Advanced Dementia: Approaches that Work, was published in the Journal of Gerontological Nursing (Vol. 35, No.11, 2009). Go to www.jognonline.com/view.asp?rID=44661 to read the article abstract.

We congratulate Dr. Carol O. Long, PhD, RN, FPCN, who is the author of the article and PCAD Co-Director. We also want to acknowledge PCAD Co-Director, Tena Alonzo, MA; the caregiving team of the Health Care Center’s Vermilion Cliffs Neighborhood; and Hospice of the Valley, Phoenix, for their stellar work on the palliative care program.
