The history of our organization can be traced to a visit made by the Senior Pastor of our sponsoring Church of the Beatitudes to an elderly woman residing in a typical 1960's vintage proprietary nursing home. The appalling conditions which surrounded her at this most vulnerable time of her life compelled the pastor to begin a series of discussions with the elders of the then fledgling parish. It did not take long for these visionaries to conceptualize a very different environment, one where older people could live, learn, and grow throughout all the stages of their being.
They dreamed of a "campus," borrowing the term from the educational community because of its sense of continual growth and vibrancy, as well as the intellectual stimulation that is part of the flavor of college campuses. This campus would consider the changing needs of the elderly, and allow for transitions through a "continuum" as their needs changed. The Beatitudes Campus championed this innovative model in its early years, setting the standard in Phoenix and beyond.
The commitment to this new concept, known today as a continuum of care, was so great that Church leadership was compelled to act decisively. This resulted in the congregation's decision to build the Campus first, even before building a permanent church home.
